Kinja'd!!!

It's hard out here to make money...... got a body shop order for a 2013 Mazda 3 GT with only 5000 MILES ON IT, and they're putting on USED DOORS.

So I make a lot less money on the order. All they need from me is a couple blackout tapes, and a interior door panel. If I was that customer I'd be FURIOUS, putting junk yard shit on my barely used car.

That's unbelievable. I'd change insurance carriers.

Does the customer know they're getting used doors?

Probably not. Would be against privacy rules to tell them, too.... I hope they read Oppo.

I don't see them problem with used doors or any bodyt panels, as long as they're the same color inside and out, and that it looks like the car never crashed.

Body parts do not wear out like mechanical parts do.

You make it sound like they're putting on used brake pads or something.

They tried this with my friends brand new SS Camaro when it got severe hail damage. He threw a fit and got new parts. Around $13K worth if I recall.

You know, in case you didn't read my comment the first time. Kinja!!

Tell the customer. "Hey, FYI—are you comfortable with this?" Used doesn't seem as bad as aftermarket to me—at least it should fit like OEM because it is OEM. Still, I'd prefer new ones if they're available. It's a 2013 car. They should be available.

Alternately, tell the shop manager to raise all kinds of hell with the insurance company. I told my shop I'd prefer new parts and they fought that out for me.

Well being a '13, they could get doors from a '09 with 100k miles on it and pink and no one would know.

I would worry about corrosion and how bad the donor car was mangled, just in case the body shop has a hard time getting them to fit.

Yeah it's terrible. Last year somebody tried to steal the mirrors off my grandfathers silverado but couldn't get them off by just yanking on them and messing with a screwdriver. Talked to a body shop to fix it saw the mirrors they were going o use and walked out with the pickup. His were like new they were not faded or scratched at since he babies the truck. The mirrors he shop got were sun bleached and on the mirrors was scratched! Insurance would not cover new ones. So disgusting.

Hmm well...I did some reading.

Looks like insurance companies have to tell the customer what kind of parts they're using in repairs.

Also looks like depending on the state, some places allow you to insist on new parts being used. Unfortunately, WI is not one of those states. From the WI Commissioner of Insurance :

Auto repair shops may use aftermarket and/or used parts when repairing or replacing a damaged part (i.e., bumpers, bumper covers, and associated bumper parts, etc.). Aftermarket parts are produced by companies other than the original equipment manufacturers (known as OEM parts).

Auto insurance contracts do not generally specify what parts will be used. You may request that aftermarket parts not be used to repair your vehicle, but you are responsible for any repair costs that exceed the final claim settlement negotiated with the insurance company.

Maybe, but there shouldn't be that much rust, if any at all, in three years, even in the northeast. They could always get the doors from a car that was crashed on the *other* side, or if it was just bought back as a lemon or something.

For example, if the driver's side was hit, then get the doors from a car that was hit on the passenger's side, etc. Obviously if the door doesn't fit, they can't use it.

The service king in town is very nice and asks if we want new parts, used, or aftermarket.

Sounds like their insurance sucks.

Here we'd be forced to use new parts up until 20,000kms.

What's the difference? As long as the door's not rusty, or somehow mangled, it's not like a part which wears out. I'm assuming the whole car's being repainted, though, but if not even the new doors will be a slightly different colour.

Yeah but in the body shop's case it's "Hello, Nibble's Salvage and Wrecking? I see you have two doors for a Mazda3. PLZ SND K THX BYE".

They will have no idea (well, a little but they won't care) what car they came off of, color, condition, etc. The insurance company used their tool to find the cheapest decent door in the area, and that's what they'll pay for.

Yeah, a little research on the body shop's part will net them a better newer door, but the cost will surely be higher, and they're not going to lose profit for that. And knowing insurance companies, they'd rather pay the body shop a few hours labor to massage the door into place if it does not quite fit than to find them a better door.

They will paint the doors per the car's paint code, and blend them into the fenders hood and roof.

Just put yourself in the customer's shoes. Brand new car. 5k miles. Paying $$$$ a month to insure it. Wouldn't you want BRAND NEW parts? Not some used stuff off someone else's wrecked car?

You generally get what you pay for. I use Amica Mutual; have done so for 25 years. Great people to deal with...and holy crap easy to get somebody on the phone and they don't try to make me do stuff on the internet if I don't want to.

I was putting myself in the customer's shoes. As long as the doors are undamaged and of the same quality as new, I couldn't care less where they come from. I would be pissed off, though, that they're going to end up a different colour to the rest of the car.

Rules is rules. The body shop gave me no customer info. Just so happens when I ran the VIN in our system, I found the customer had bought the car from us. I cannot use that info to contact the customer, lest I violate company policy and privacy laws in this state.

IF they were to make a case about it, which they probably wouldn't, but I'm not going to put my job on the line over two doors.

No, I hear you and understand your situation. But that state law seems like nothing more than a freeway to defrauding customer...
